What are Holding Tanks?

A holding tank, also known as a waste tank, is a “tank” or a receptacle which is used to store sewage that will be treated in another location.  When a septic tank is in place and the ground is not suitable for a drain field, a holding or waste tank may be used.  This holding tank simply holds the sewage or effluent until the tank can be pumped out and the sewage is taken for treatment at different location.  Most holding tank systems have two tanks which will hold the effluent.  These tanks then need to be pumped out on a regular basis.  How frequent the tanks will need to be pumped out will depend on the amount of water used in the household.  For a household of up to 4 people the average pump-out occurs approximately every 2 to 5 months.
